Your Guide to Using #Hashtags on Facebook

If you haven’t noticed Facebook recently launched hashtags! They are already being optimized and indexed!

So you’re probably wondering what the heck is a hashtag and what does this mean for me as a business owner?

Well in simple terms a hashtag is a way for people to search and connect with others that have a common topic and to begin a conversation. For example if I am talking or looking for other people that are fans of green smoothies I could do a search in Facebook now for #greensmoothies and a feed would appear of people and pages talking about green smoothies! How brilliant is that? Think about how you could use related keywords to connecting with your ideal client and people in your niche?

You can also click on any hashtags and you’ll notice a popup box that will list the posts. You will also notice that the posts are not in a strict chronological order. This is where the Facebook algorithm applies and the posts with the most engagement & popularity will win. Good news? We will see..

Keep in mind that as with all personal profile features on Facebook, your privacy settings will still be active so if you publish a post on your profile to friends only & the post contains a hashtag then the hash tag will only show to friends searching for that hashtag. Public posts with hashtags will be seen by everyone, just like your fanpage being public.

Hashtag Check List:

1. #Don’t #use #fb #hashtags #with #every #word #you #write! That is a big turn-off and you’ll look like you don’t know what you’re doing!

2. Use a variety of hashtags but write out a list of 5-7 hashtags that are relevant to your industry to be consistent with your marketing. For example if you are a life coach this could be #abundance, #lawofattraction #lifecoach #dreambig.  Also if you have an event or tele-seminar you can create a hashtag for that!

3. Don’t use hashtags every time you post. Just when it’s relevant, but don’t over do it.

4. Don’t use super long hashtags. #todaywasagreatdaytogoforarun. Don’t tempt it!

5. Use hashtags on photo’s, videos and posts!

Note: that any hashtags that you use on other platforms such as instagram will automatically be clickable when shared on Facebook! So awesome!

So in conclusion I think this is an incredible tool to listen to the market place. See, hear and be part of the conversations about your related keywords and products. Connect with people on a deeper level and be able to serve your market to the best of your ability!
